Tempo

Why do we swing so fast? Many golfers have a common theme to their golfing problems, they swing the club faster than they should.

One reason for this is that it probably feels more powerful to have a right whack at the ball using the hands. Golfers who give themselves more time let the bigger muscles create the power.

Swing With Ease

Another cause of an overly fast swing is anxiety. Most golfers are very anxious about the result of their upcoming shot and rush it, either to see how the ball will fly, or maybe just to get the shot over with.

If you are one of those golfers who swings too fast, here are a few exercises you can try the next time you play or practise:

  • Pause at the top drill – take a 7 or 8 iron and make your backswing, but instead of rushing down at the ball, wait for 2 or 3 seconds before you start your downswing
  • Slow practice swing – before you hit your shot make a very slow practice swing. Then step up to the ball and try to hit the shot at the same pace. Trust yourself and your swing
  • Match your downswing to your backswing speed – make a conscious effort to make your backswing and downswing identical speeds. Count to yourself as you swing ‘one–and-two’ with ‘one’ being the backswing,‘and’ being the top of the backswing and ‘two’ representing the downswing
  • Hit shots with your feet together – again use a 7 or 8 iron and with your feet together see how many balls you can hit without falling over. Then try to maintain the same swing speed when you come to hit shots with your normal stance
