Take Away

The first few feet away from the ball are the most important of a golf swing and you can improve your ball striking by paying particular attention to this area of the swing.

Avoid Inside Moves

An inside move is quite a familiar fault during the first part of the swing. The result of this will probably be an overcompensating move over the top on the downswing causing either a pull or a big slice.

I believe the windy and wet weather we have in Scotland has a lot to do with this swing fault.

The reason for this is that if a golfer is playing in poor conditions, then they are unlikely to let the club move away from their body. This results in the club swinging too much around themselves.

Feel a Good Take Away

This is one of the most common problems in the developing golfer and one of the most destructive.

Get a friend to hold a club parallel to the target line under your club at address so that your club’s shaft rests on it and slide your club back and forward. This will give you an idea of an ‘on plane’ take away, which will help you feel the correct move away from the ball.
