Perfect Posture

One of the most important and overlooked fundamentals in golf is posture. Here is a routine, which should help you achieve this ideal position:
  • Stand straight up and put your hands against your hip joints and push your hips back (feel like your hip pockets are going up as your upper body bends from the hips, but keep your chest up, standing proud)
  • Add a little knee flex, from their straight position just let them ‘pop’ forward slightly
  • Let your shoulders relax and arms drop so they are hanging
  • Let your chin drop slightly (not onto your chest)

Once you put a club in your hands and take this position the end of the club should point to your belt buckle. This gives you a reference as to how high your hands should be.

Keep Your Balance

To keep your balance during the swing, your weight should be 50-50 between the heels and the balls of your feet. You should feel that if someone were to push your back or chest you would feel you would be able to resist that push quite easily.

Practise getting into the proper setup position as often as you can so that you don’t have to think about all the individual adjustments. Then when the feeling is ingrained, keep practising so you don’t lose it.

Spread Your Weight

One of the accepted adages in golf is that your weight should be on the balls of your feet and even somewhat on the toes. I think that this is very dangerous, because too many people confuse balls of feet with toes and getting your weight too far forward is the worst mistake you can make.
