Distance From the Ball

A question I’m often asked is ‘How far should I stand from the ball at address and how will I know if I’m standing at the right distance?’ It depends on how long your arms are and which club you’re using.

A Simple Test

Here is a test that I like for distance from the ball:
  • Take your normal setup with the club behind the ball
  • Now take your right hand off the club and let it hang freely

If your right hand is beside where it would normally be on the grip, this means that your arms are in a natural, relaxed position on the club. This also means that you are the correct distance from the ball.

If your right hand hangs closer to your body than it did when you gripped the club, then you are reaching too much at address and standing too far away from the ball.

Conversely, if you’re standing too close to the ball, your right hand will swing outside the golf club.

Coping with Longer Clubs

Of course, the longer the club, the further you should stand from the ball. As a rule, golfers tend to stand too far away from the ball.

If you stand too far away it does two things to your setup:
  • Creates tension in your arms
  • Puts you out of balance

This right hand off the club measurement is a good way to be sure that your posture and your distance from the ball at address are as they should be.
